Africa Briefing, 1 November 2026

Eastern DR Congo remains the focus. A BBC report and two Telegram channels say former president Joseph Kabila has been named leader of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation, aligned with the M23 rebel movement that holds parts of the east; this is still not confirmed by major outlets beyond the BBC. Separately, two Telegram channels report new US sanctions on Rwanda over the collapse of the 2025 Washington Accords, which Kinshasa says Rwanda undermined by backing M23. Kigali has not been confirmed as responding in the reporting.
